Qualitative and quantitative research in Cambridge into the role and scope of practice of the physiotherapy assistant practitioner (AP) in respiratory care, focusing on postoperative cardiothoracic care. The implementation of the role at Papworth Hospital is described and the duties of the physiotherapy AP are discussed, including the provision of a weekend rehabilitation service. Skill mix issues are discussed.
