Literature review examining when pregnant women are most likely to take folic acid (FA) supplements to prevent birth defects such as neural tube defects (NTDs). The role of FA in preventing NTDs and the optimum time for taking FA supplements are outlined and reasons for incorrect timing of use and poor FA compliance are discussed. 39 references.
