Policy interventions required to reduce salt intake in the general population worldwide. Costs of high blood pressure and cardiovascular disease and the value of reducing salt intake are presented. Use of public awareness campaigns, setting new standards for salt content in processed foods, monitoring salt intake and regulating the food industry are discussed as methods to encourage salt reduction. 19 refs.
