AHPs celebrate project success
The SIP may have come to an end – but the lessons learned point to a brand new way of working for AHPs. The Service Improvement Project (SIP) was described simply as ‘an initiative to improve access to AHP services’, but it became so much more. The project has not only delivered sustainable quality and productivity improvements to benefit patients and the public which can be shared widely, it has also given a new lease of life to many people across the profession, showing them how they can get involved in areas such as leadership and commissioning.

New National eHealth Forum
The Department of Health has established a new national forum for the Allied Health Professions. The AHP eHealth forum will involve national experts and clinical leads to advise on the implementation of the Information Strategy, and the impact on AHPs and service users.

Coventry Group publishes guidance on Restrictive Diets in Autism
After six years of work by a health service multidisciplinary group in Coventry, their work on ‘Restricted and Obsessive diets in Autism’ has been published. The publication provides research-based practical and concise advice that will inform professionals, carers and families interested in restricted eating in autism.

Causes, symptoms and treatment of Parkinson Disease. Motor and non-motor symptoms, the main types of drugs used and the importance of receiving medication on time are described. Assessment and Treatment of Working Memory Deficits in School-Age Children: The Role of the Speech-Language Pathologist.

To review research addressing the relationship of working memory (WM) to language development and academic functioning and to consider the role of the speechlanguage pathologist (SLP) in assessment and intervention of WM difficulties in school-age children. Research to date has documented that children with language impairments frequently have poor WM skills. SLPs can support poor WM skills by considering both modifications to the environment and child-enacted knowledge and skills, which may serve to reduce the impact of poor WM skills on learning and academic success.

The main symptoms of heartburn are listed and the potential link with gastro-oesophageal reflux disease (GORD) is discussed. Health benefits of t'ai chi examined
“Elderly people should take up the gentle martial art of T’ai Chi for the sake of their physical and mental health,” said The Daily Telegraph. The news is based on a study that examined a spectrum of potential health benefits of t’ai chi, the ultra slow martial art that is reputed to improve both body and mind. The research pulled together 35 systematic reviews, a type of study that combines multiple studies to examine an issue. These individual reviews each looked at benefits of t’ai chi for various conditions, including preventing osteoporosis and preventing falls.
