Improving care for people with long term conditions: 'at a glance' information sheets for healthcare professionals
The Department has produced a series of information sheets for doctors, nurses, those delivering personal health budgets, allied health professionals, health trainers and anyone supporting individuals with long term conditions. The information sheets cover a range of topics including care planning, care co-ordination, managing need and assessment of risk, motivating people to self care, goal setting and action planning and end of life care.

Rehabilitation nursing: invisible and underappreciated therapy.

Overview of the role of nurses in rehabilitation. The tendency for patients to view nurses' involvement in eating, dressing, bathing and talking as non-therapeutic work is discussed. A research study carried out in a small neuro-rehabilitation centre to assess the reliability of the Care Dependency Scale as a multidisciplinary outcome measure for rehabilitation is described, and the benefits for the staff of being involved in the project outlined. 8 refs.

Developing a magnetic sign system to ensure patients receive appropriate nutritional care.

Development at Milton Keynes Hospital Foundation Trust of a pictorial magnetic signage system to reduce the possibility of malnutrition in patients. The magnets, displayed at the bedside, were designed to alert staff when patients have special dietary requirements or restrictions or need help with feeding. The pilot is described and its link to the productive ward initiative is discussed. 11 refs.

The NHS Confederation’s Health Services Research Network has published a
Briefing focusing on the role and value of research, and in particular health services research, to NHS organisations. Research is crucial to the NHS. It helps the NHS understand, adapt and respond to the challenges it faces. These challenges might come from changes in policy, populations, technologies or disease patterns. In the present climate, research evidence can play a key role in helping the NHS respond to the challenge of improving quality while simultaneously finding efficiencies.
