Investigating physiotherapy and occupational therapy students' outcome effectiveness.
International Journal of Therapy & Rehabilitation, 01 March 2009, vol./is. 16/3(167-175)
Research has looked at the differences between outcomes of patients treated by novice vs expert therapists, but to date research has not looked at differences in outcomes of patients treated by students and therapists. The purpose of this pilot study was to determine if there was a difference in functional status, treatment visits or treatment duration of patients treated by student therapists compared to patients treated by occupational therapists and physiotherapists.

Oscillating devices for airway clearance in people with cystic fibrosis
Chest physiotherapy is widely prescribed to assist the clearance of airway secretions in people with cystic fibrosis (CF). Oscillating devices generate intra- or extra-thoracic oscillations orally or external to the chest wall. Internally they create variable resistances within the airways, generating controlled oscillating positive pressure which mobilises mucus. Extra-thoracic oscillations are generated by forces outside the respiratory system, e.g. high frequency chest wall oscillation.

Evidence-based treatment and stuttering--historical perspective.
Prins D, Ingham RJ
Journal of Speech, Language & Hearing Research, 01 February 2009, vol./is. 52/1(254-263)
To illustrate the way in which both fluency shaping (FS) and stuttering management (SM) treatments for developmental stuttering in adults are evidence based. METHOD: A brief review of the history and development of FS and SM is provided. It illustrates that both can be justified as evidence-based treatments, each treatment seeking evidence of a different kind: FS seeks evidence concerning treatment outcome, and SM seeks evidence concerning the nature of the stutter event (Athens username required for full text access).
